At KS4 students have the opportunity to follow the Edexcel BTEC Home Cooking Skills. All students work towards a Level 2 qualification.
The course consists of units covering; food safety and hygiene; healthy eating and nutrition; meal planning; following recipes for breakfasts, lunches and dinner dishes, both savoury and sweet. Students gather evidence throughout the course of dishes cooked and evaluated, both at school and at home. Although there is no final exam the students have to plan, prepare, cook and serve a nutritious two-course meal for two people. The planning, evaluation and evidence of this may be moderated by an external examiner.
Pupils at KS3 develop and extend the skills they need to plan and prepare nutritious home cooked dishes. They learn the basic skills of safety and hygiene whilst also learning how to follow recipes, evaluate their own and others finished dishes and how to present food attractively.
